"Ski" Demski - An Overview
Then in 1980 he decided to install a 120 Ft flagpole in front of his home. Since "Ski" is of Polish descent, he decided to christen it "The Pole." In July, 1980 on the christening day, "The Pole" flew a 30 x 60 Ft "Old Glory" on her staff. It was quite the day, there was a Polish Polka Band and street party. "Ski" then commissioned an "American Flag" for when the hostages from Iran returned. The size of the flag was 47 x 82 Ft. It was raised for the 444 day celebration on January 25, 1981. It sure was a happy, joyous day for all Americans. This same flag was used at the USC Library for when the former President Bush (I) was campaigning for Vice-President. That is when "Ski" decided to commission Superflag I, which was 95 x 160 Ft Superflag's maiden unfurling was at Tampa, Florida at Superbowl XVIII in January 1984. In the same year, the flag was presented at the Major League Baseball All-Star Game in San Francisco, California. Since then, he commissioned flags the size of a football field and larger. In 1996 his World's Largest Superflag (255 x 505 Ft), 2.8 football fields large, was hoisted on Hoover Dam for the Olympic Torch Relay Crossing. "Ski" and the Superflag made it into the 1997 Guinness Book of Records ® for the "Largest Flag in the World.
"Ski" started working at an early age in the coal mines of his home state of Pennsylvania. He operated heavy equipment until a mine accident caused an injured in 1973 and ended that persute. After sobering up March 13, 1975, "Ski" had remained sober until his passing in 2002. He was heard to say that he never could stay sober until he started making bumper stickers, "so I guess I'll have to make stickers the rest of my life." And he did! "Ski" also ran for Mayor of Long Beach, but unfortunately was unsuccessful in his attempt. He was well recognized for his contribution to his community. In 1991 "Ski" went to Italy on a tour with Jan Lewan who is a close friend of Pope John Paul II and had the honor of having 2 audiences with the Pope. The 1st was at the Vatican and then two days later at St. Peters Cathedral, "Ski" is asking the Pope for a blessing for our country and to have President Bush (I) make the right decision in getting into the Persian Gulf War. Unfurling such a large flag such as Superflag is never an easy task, to say the least. For this reason, "Ski" has depended on many "behind the scenes" associates who have been with him for many years. Knowing that you have someone who you can depend on is paramount when undertaking such a task, and "Ski" was thankful for everyone who has surrounded him with help over the years.
In years past "Santa Ski" had become the official Santa riding his Sleigh with Rudolph and the rest of the reindeer in the famous Daisy Lane Parade of Long Beach. "Santa Ski" had been visiting schools giving the children candy canes for the past decade. "Santa Ski" always enjoyed the cheer, festivity and togetherness of the holidays, as displayed in this photo, (click link). The canes are paid for by what "Ski" called his Golden Dozen. "Ski" had even been known to spread holiday cheer with celebrities such as country music recording star Lee Greenwood. But in some cases, "Ski" had been spotted dawning traditional holiday garb other than Christmas as you can clearly see here during St. Patrick's Day.
On St. Patrick's Day in 1990, "Ski" placed his buddy's ashes in "The Pole" so Old Glory could always fly over him. The plaque reads in Honor of Col. Clem Maloney, U.S.A.F., Ret. "A Super Patriot who always gave honor to Old Glory." "Ski" had become an authority on how to display and unfurl large American flags. With his expertise he directed the unfurling of Superflag II in less than 30 seconds and close/exit the football or baseball field in less than 2 minutes. Thank you for your interest in Superflag.
